Katie Beery and Kris MacDonald
are hand lettering artists who love
watching the wet ink flow out of the
pen as it forms ribbons of beautiful
letters. They believe that letters
are amazing beautiful design
elements, with countless
variations, that allow the
conveyance of a message,
philosophy or thought. They have
a solid understanding of historical
letterforms and of traditional
scribal tools. Kate and Kris used
this traditional knowledge at the
Minnesota Renaissance Festival
where they demonstrated, taught,
and sold their calligraphy for more
than twenty years!
In 2005, they decided that it was
time to explore the calligraphic
potential of their original art
endeavors, to see where it might
take them in the 21st century.
The work you will see in the Off the
Page Gallery may be considered
mixed media, using a
3-dimensional, layered format
which seems to take the words
right off the page. Using
watercolor, acrylics, fabric, broad
edged pens and brushes, they are
just beginning to explore the
possibilities.
